HOME FROM HOME

CONCEPT

A holistic care environment designed to support individuals with Alzheimer’s disease through architecture that remembers. The project integrates sustainable materials, sensory cues, and spatial familiarity to create an atmosphere of dignity, comfort, and emotional connection.

Skills demonstrated: spatial composition, sustainable design, research synthesis, 3D modelling, empathetic problem-solving.

APPROACH

Reused excavated site earth in rammed-earth walls, embedding memory and place into the structure.

Adapted an existing warehouse into a greenhouse, promoting rehabilitation through nature.

Used high-contrast colour coding and distinct material textures to support spatial recognition for residents with cognitive decline.

Designed residential and communal spaces prioritising daylight.

OUTCOME

A care model that redefines institutional architecture as empathetic design, thus transforming a clinical typology into a space of familiarity, independence, and belonging.

The overlap between dementia and visual impairment makes high contrast essential in spatial design. Each front door is given a distinct colour to aid recognition and strengthen the resident’s sense of connection to home.
